Does the very thought of visiting the dentist fill you with dread and panic? Do you often defer seeking necessary dental care because of severe anxiety, even when you are in pain?

If you resonate with any of these feelings, please know that you are not alone. Many people experience dental phobia, a low pain threshold, or simply lead busy lives that make complex, lengthy dental treatments challenging.

It is for people who experience severe anxiety, or those needing extensive work completed efficiently, that we offer Sleep Dentistry (intravenous sedation) here at Mentone Smiles in Melbourne. This allows us to perform procedures with maximum comfort and minimal stress for you.

What is Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, is a method of safely performing dental procedures while the patient is in a deeply relaxed, almost sleep-like state. It is not general anaesthesia, as you remain conscious and able to respond, but you will be extremely comfortable, drowsy, and likely have very little, if any, memory of the procedure afterwards.
This not only helps anxious patients relax and be more comfortable during treatment but also allows our experienced dental team to focus uninterrupted on the task at hand, often completing extensive work in a single, relaxed session.

Who is Sleep Dentistry For?

Sleep dentistry can be a life-changing solution for a variety of individuals and situations:

Types of Sedation Used

Depending upon the type of treatment to be done and the anxiety levels of the patient, the sleep dentists at our Melbourne clinic use different levels of sedation:

Minimal Sedation

The patient stays awake but deeply relaxed, usually via inhaled nitrous oxide. Ideal for mild anxiety and simple procedures.

Moderate Sedation

The patient is drowsy and relaxed, with minimal memory of the procedure. Temporary slurred speech is possible.

Deep Sedation

The patient is almost unconscious and has little to no recollection of treatment. Recovery may take longer than lighter sedation.

General Anaesthesia

The patient is fully unconscious and pain-free throughout the procedure. Used for major surgeries with careful monitoring.

FAQ's

Is sleep dentistry the same as general anaesthesia?
No. Sleep dentistry, specifically IV sedation, means you are conscious and can respond to commands, but you are deeply relaxed and drowsy. General anaesthesia involves being completely unconscious and requires specific hospital-based facilities.
Sleep dentistry is very safe when performed by an experienced dental professional, working in conjunction with a qualified anaesthetist who monitors your vital signs throughout the procedure. We review your full medical history prior to treatment to ensure your safety.
Absolutely not. You will need a responsible adult to escort you home and remain with you for several hours following the procedure, as the effects of the sedation take time to wear off completely.
Are all dental procedures suitable for sleep dentistry?
Yes, most dental procedures, especially complex ones such as dental implants or Wisdom Teeth Removal, can be performed under sedation. It is often the preferred method for anyone with high anxiety, regardless of the procedure type.
Generally, Medicare does not cover the cost of dental sedation. Private health insurance may cover a portion of the fee, depending on the level of coverage you have. We recommend checking with your fund provider for clarification before commencing treatment.
Most patients experience little to no pain during sleep dentistry. The sedation keeps you relaxed and reduces your awareness, while local anaesthesia is used to numb the treatment area. Many patients report feeling like the procedure was over in minutes, with minimal discomfort afterwards.
