Root Canal Treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a vital procedure used to save a tooth when the nerve and pulp become infected or severely inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental treatments, or a fracture. At Mentone Smiles, we offer precise, gentle, and highly effective root canal therapy designed to remove infection, relieve discomfort, and preserve the natural structure of your tooth, providing the strongest long-term solution for maintaining oral health.
We know that this type of treatment can cause anxiety, which is why our compassionate team focuses on comfort, clear communication, and modern techniques to deliver a smooth and stress-free experience. From diagnosis to treatment, we take the time to explain each step, ensuring you feel confident and supported throughout your visit. Our advanced technology allows us to treat the infected tooth with great accuracy, ensuring thorough cleaning and sealing of the canals.
By addressing the problem early, root canal treatment not only eliminates pain but also prevents further complications, restores normal chewing function, and protects surrounding teeth from strain. At Mentone Smiles, our goal is to help you maintain a healthy, natural smile while making your experience as comfortable as possible. If you’re experiencing persistent toothache, sensitivity, or swelling, timely care can make all the difference in preserving your oral health.

Understanding Root Canal Treatment
Inside every tooth is the pulp, a soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. When this tissue becomes irreversibly infected, it can cause significant pain and lead to a dangerous abscess if left untreated. Root Canal Treatment works by:
Eliminating Infection
Cleaning and Shaping
Sealing
When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?
While sometimes symptom-free, the most common signs that you may require root canal treatment include:
- Severe Toothache: Persistent pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
- Prolonged Sensitivity: Lingering sensitivity or pain to hot or cold temperatures, even after the source is removed.
- Gum Swelling: Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums, often indicating an abscess or infection.
- Tooth Discolouration: Darkening of the tooth, which suggests the nerve has died.
The Procedure and Restoration
Step 01
The Treatment Phase
Step 02
The Restoration Phase
A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy becomes more brittle over time because it no longer has the internal nourishment from the pulp.
- Final Filling: A permanent filling is placed to seal the access hole.
- Dental Crowns: For most back teeth and highly compromised front teeth, a Dental Crown is placed to fully protect and reinforce the tooth structure, restoring its full strength and function. This is vital for longevity.

FAQ's
Is a root canal treatment painful?
No. This is a common myth. The treatment is performed to relieve the severe pain caused by the infected nerve. With modern local anaesthetics, the procedure itself is pain-free. There may be some temporary tenderness afterwards, which is easily managed with over-the-counter medication.
How long does the procedure take?
A typical root canal treatment appointment can take between 60 to 90 minutes. If the infection is complex or the tooth is highly inflamed, it may require two appointments to ensure complete disinfection.
What is the success rate of a root canal?
Root canal treatment has a very high success rate, often exceeding 90%. Success is significantly increased when the tooth is properly restored afterwards, usually with a Dental Crown, to prevent fracture and re-infection.
What are the alternatives to root canal treatment?
The only effective alternative is Tooth Extraction. If the tooth is removed, the space will require replacement using a Dental Implant, a Dental bridge, or a Denture to maintain chewing function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. Saving the natural tooth is almost always the preferred choice.
Do I definitely need a Dental Crown afterwards?
For most teeth, especially molars and premolars used for heavy chewing, a Dental Crown is strongly recommended. The root canal procedure, and sometimes the deep decay that caused it, weakens the tooth structure, making it highly susceptible to fracture without the full protection of a crown.
Will I need multiple visits for a root canal?
Most root canal treatments can be completed in a single visit, but some teeth with complex root anatomy or severe infection may require two or more appointments to ensure the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and properly sealed.
