Dental Inlays and Onlays

Durable and Conservative Restorations

When a tooth is too damaged for a standard filling but not severely compromised enough to require a full crown, Dental Inlays and Onlays provide an ideal solution. These restorations are custom-designed and fabricated in a dental laboratory, ensuring an excellent fit, superior strength, and long-lasting durability. Compared to direct fillings, inlays and onlays offer better resistance to wear and fracture, while also preserving more of your natural tooth structure than a full crown would.

Often referred to as partial crowns, inlays and onlays are a high-quality, conservative, and ethical treatment option. At Mentone Smiles, we use them to restore severely damaged, fractured, or decayed teeth, allowing the tooth to regain its full function and strength. These restorations not only improve chewing efficiency but also enhance the overall appearance of your smile. With proper care, inlays and onlays can last many years, making them a smart investment in your oral health.

Another advantage of dental inlays and onlays is their precision and customisation. Because they are crafted in a lab to match your tooth’s exact shape, size, and colour, they provide a seamless, natural appearance that blends perfectly with your surrounding teeth. This level of precision also reduces the risk of future edge decay, helping maintain long-term oral health. Additionally, the materials used, such as porcelain or composite resin, are highly stain-resistant, helping your restored tooth maintain its aesthetic appeal over time.

Dental Inlay

An inlay is used when the decay or damage is confined to the top surface of the tooth (the chewing surface), specifically within the cusps (the points of the tooth). Think of it as fitting precisely into the prepared hole, much like a filling, but providing far greater strength.

Dental Onlay

An onlay is used when the damage is more extensive, covering one or more cusps of the tooth. The onlay sits over the damaged cusp, offering protection and support to the weakened structure. This is the partial crown option, as it restores a significant portion of the tooth’s biting surface without covering the entire tooth.

The Advantages of Inlays and Onlays

Choosing an inlay or onlay over a large filling or a full crown offers several key benefits:

The Two-Appointment Procedure

The process for fitting an inlay or onlay typically requires two visits to our clinic:

Step 01

Preparation and Impression

During the first appointment, the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed. An accurate impression (mould) of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to our trusted dental laboratory. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth.

Step 02

Fitting and Bonding

At the second appointment, the temporary restoration is removed, and the custom-made inlay or onlay is meticulously checked for fit and bite. Once confirmed, it is permanently bonded to the tooth using a strong dental adhesive.

FAQ's

How long do inlays and onlays last?

Inlays and onlays are exceptionally durable. With regular check-ups, they can last for 15 to 30 years, significantly longer than a typical large composite Tooth Filling.

They are primarily considered restorative because their main function is to strengthen and restore the tooth’s function after decay or fracture. However, because they are colour-matched and look highly natural, they offer excellent cosmetic results.

Most commonly, modern inlays and onlays are made from high-strength porcelain (ceramic) or composite resin. Porcelain is often chosen for its incredible durability and ability to perfectly mimic natural tooth enamel.

What is the difference between an onlay and a full crown?

A covers the entire external surface of the tooth. An onlay only covers the damaged areas, typically one or more cusps, leaving the remaining healthy sides of the tooth intact. The onlay is therefore a more conservative option.

The procedure is virtually painless. We use a local anaesthetic during the preparation appointment to ensure your comfort. A temporary restoration will protect your tooth until the final inlay or onlay is bonded during your second visit.

Caring for an inlay or onlay is similar to caring for natural teeth. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and attending routine dental check-ups. Avoid biting on very hard foods to prevent damage and ensure your restoration lasts as long as possible.
